ICT nieuws t/m week 44 – 2009

De afgelopen 2 weken was uiteraard de officiele lancering van Windows 7 en niet te vergeten Server 2008 R2 het meest in het oog springende nieuws. Hier heb ik dan ook wel een flink aantal posts over.

Erg goed zijn de artikelen van het Windows performance team over diverse nieuwe features van de OS’en. Zeker doornemen.

Dan vind ik het ook erg leuk dat onze Jaap Wesselius een (e-)boek heeft geschreven over Exchange 2010. Downloaden dat ding.

Uiteraard hebben een aantal van de vaste auteurs weer een stukje afgeleverd op MSExchange.org over zowel 2007 als 2010.

Ander goed nieuws is dat het probleem dat de MS09-056 update op LCS en OCS servers veroorzaakte nu verholpen is. Heb je een dergelijke systeem, lees dan absoluut het artikel hierover.

De Windows 7 whopper is natuurlijk maar een geintje.

Het Internet Storm Center meldt een tweetal nieuwe updates van VMware voor ESX.

Cisco heeft een security advisory uitgebracht i.v.m. kwetsbaarheden in haar WLAN controllers.

Er blijkt een werkgroep te zijn van de Carnegie Mellon universiteit die aan een geheel nieuwe manier van clustering werkt. Omdat het hier lichte machientjes betreft heeft men het over Wimpy Nodes. Het acroniem, dat de IT-industrie toch moest bedenken, is FAWN geworden: Fast Array of Wimpy Nodes.

De werkgroep heeft al twee documenten uitgebracht over het onderwerp. http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~vrv/papers/hotos2009.pdf en http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~fawnproj/papers/fawn-sosp2009.pdf. Carnegie Mellon heeft nauw samengewerkt met Intel.

Het doel van de werkgroep is om met low powered systemen een cluster te bouwen dat meer werk kan verzetten dan de reguliere 2-socket x86 server maar bij een lager stroomverbruik.

Zo liet men een cluster zien van 14 machientjes met een 500 MHz Atom, elk 256 MB RAM en 4 GB flash storage. Elk van de nodes gebruikt maximaal 5 Watt bij maximale belasting.

Al met al een erg interessante studie. Hier gaan we vast meer van horen.

Deel 17 – Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2: Remote Desktop Services Virtualization (RDS-V)

RDS-V is Microsoft’s naam voor VDI. Het gaat hier om virtuele desktops op Hyper-V 2.0 wat op zijn beurt weer draait op Server 2008 R2.

De broker speelt hierin uiteraard weer een grote rol want deze leidt een gebruiker die wil inloggen naar zijn of haar virtuele desktop.

Het artikel heeft hele goede plaatjes waarin duidelijk wordt welke componenten je nodig hebt en hoe die op elkaar ingrijpen.

Deel 18 – Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 R2: Remote Desktop IP Virtualization

Deel 18 is het laatste deel over VDI. Dit deel gaat over de virtualisatie van IP-adressen. Dit is een belangrijke feature voor sommige applicaties.

Oorspronkelijk had Microsoft voor Windows Vista en Server 2008 een nieuw file system bedacht genaamd WinFS. Dit file system zou veel verder gaan op het gebied van classificatie van bestanden. Helaas was het een brug te ver voor Microsoft en werd dit deel van het Vista project om zeep geholpen.

In Windows Server 2008 R2 pakt men echter een deel van de tekortkoming in NTFS op het gebied van classificatie op. Zo is er nu een uitbreiding in de File Server Resource Manager die voorziet in deze behoefte. Het is nu mogelijk om nieuwe attributen aan files te hangen die je kunt gebruiken voor classificatie. Denk aan voorbeelden zoals “Classified”, of “Confidential” of zelfs “Never expire”.

Onderzoekers claimen dat processors een maximum snelheid hebben waar we niet boven kunnen komen. Men vergelijkt het met de snelheid van licht, we hebben nog niets kunnen vinden dat sneller gaat.

De onderzoekers verwachten dat de grens zo ongeveer over 75 jaar bereikt wordt, als Moore’s wet standhoudt. Of die zal standhouden is nog maar de vraag, het zou wel eens kunnen dat het tempo in de toekomst zal afnemen vanwege technische problemen die overwonnen moeten worden.

Windows XP mode is net verschenen en gelijk verschijnt het eerste document van Microsoft hoe bedrijven dit zouden kunnen inzetten in hun omgevingen.

Mary-Jo Foley heeft een artikel over een van Microsoft’s grootste producten: SharePoint. Microsoft verdient al goed geld met het product en toch denkt zelfs Steve Ballmer dat het een ‘unsung hero’ is. Velen begrijpen het product niet zo goed.

Is dat raar? Nee, dat komt omdat het eigenlijk 6 producten in 1 zijn. Zo is het een content management system, een enterprise social networking product en ook een intranet search engine.

Met versie 2010 maakt Microsoft er nog meer een platform van. Mary-Jo Foley is iemand die haar uiterste best doet om dit product te volgen. Zeker nu ze gehoord heeft dat het ook de back-end gaat worden voor de Office Web Apps.

Techradar heeft een 50-tal Windows 7 tips opgeschreven. Dit is tot nu toe de grootste verzameling die ik ben tegengekomen.

Er zitten een hele berg goede tips tussen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de Problem Steps Recorder, of het kunnen mounten van VHD’s, de nieuwe calculator, het vanaf de command line kunnen instellen van de timezone, etc.

Er verschijnen nu volop artikelen over de nieuwe SharePoint versie, versie TwentyTen.

Mary-Jo Foley heeft een artikel geschreven over de vernieuwingen. Ze noemt wat technische zaken, zoals 64-bit only, Server 2008 of hoger en minimum RAM van 8 GB. Als database is er het volgende requirement: of SQL Server 2005 SP3 met CU3, SQL Server 2008 SP1 met CU 2 of SQL Server 2008 R2 (nu nog in bèta).

Ook komen er in het artikel een aantal van de nieuwe features voorbij zoals de integratie met Visual Studio 2010, integratie met Office 2010, de ribbon interface, social tagging en document lifecycle management.

En passant wordt gemeld dat het product vrijwel zeker in november in publieke bèta zal gaan. De verwachte datum dat het product te koop zal zijn is mei/juni 2010 (gelijk met Office 2010).

Al met al een bijzonder interessant stuk voor SharePoint aficionados, maar lees hieronder voor verder.

Het Windows performance team heeft bij deel 20 van hun launch series een artikel over Federated Search. Dit gaat dus over de zoekfunctie maar dat zelfs buiten de eigen PC. Zeer interessante materie waar bedrijven absoluut hun voordeel mee zouden kunnen en misschien wel moeten doen.

Overview

BitLocker protection on removable drives is known as BitLocker To Go. When a BitLocker-protected removable drive is unlocked on a computer running Windows 7, the drive is automatically recognized and the user is either prompted for credentials to unlock the drive or the drive is unlocked automatically if configured to do so. Computers running Windows XP or Windows Vista do not automatically recognize that the removable drive is BitLocker-protected. With the BitLocker To Go Reader users can unlock the BitLocker-protected drives by using a password or a recovery password (also known as a recovery key) and gain read-only access to their data.

Met Systems Director VMControl v2.2 gaat IBM proberen om beheertooling te bieden die alle belangrijke virtuele platformen kan beheren. Denk hierbij aan haar eigen Power systemen maar Hyper-V en vSphere.

Het product werd in juli als v2.1 gelanceerd en in december van dit jaar verschijnt v2.2.

Andre Da Costa heeft een zeer uitgebreide review geschreven over de RTM-versie van Windows 7 (ultimate). Het stuk heeft zo’n 26 hoofdstukken en gaat langs alle features die het nieuwe OS rijk is. Omdat het stuk zo uitgebreid is kunnen mensen van allerlei pluimage er iets mee, IT managers, deployment mensen, support engineers.

Het is wel een flink stuk om te lezen want er zijn 70 pagina’s. Saai is het allerminst.

Nu Windows 7 ook echt in de winkel verkrijgbaar is zie je dat allerlei andere partijen ook meedoen in de bruisende wereld van het nieuwe OS. Zo hebben allerlei partijen een desktop theme uitgebracht, waaronder Ferrari en Ducati (om maar eens een paar kleurrijke voorbeelden te noemen).

Microsoft zelf heeft ook een flinke duit in het zakje gedaan en heeft een heleboel thema’s verzameld.

Cisco had het al aangekondigd, er komen varianten van de Nexus switch die in blades van concurrenten past. Zo heeft IBM nu ook een Nexus 4000 blade. Met deze switch kan de convergentie van ‘gewoon’ Ethernet verkeer en FCoE vorm krijgen.

Afgelopen februari bracht Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 uit als update. Dit pakketje installeerde ‘stiekem’ een Windows Presentation Foundation plug-in in Firefox. De plug-in maakt embedding van XAML in webpagina’s mogelijk.

Juist deze update is kwetsbaar voor zogenaamde drive-by aanvallen. Een surfer moet alleen een bepaalde pagina bekijken om aangevallen te kunnen worden.

Wat natuurlijk wel opvallend genoemd mag worden is Microsoft’s beleid om deze plug-in stilletjes bij alle Firefox gebruikers te installeren. Toen Google iets dergelijks deed met een Chrome plug-in voor IE 6 blies Microsoft nogal hoog van de toren.

Volgens WebSense is er een nep OWA-site waar gebruikers naartoe gelokt worden om ‘hun security settings’ bij te werken. Mensen worden naar deze site gelokt via overtuigende e-mails. Zo wordt hun persoonlijke e-mailadres gebruikt en lijkt de link echt te wijzen naar de OWA website van het bedrijf waar ze werken.

Uiteindelijk gaat het om een gespoofde website waar passanten ‘worden voorzien’ van een Zbot trojan.

Websense zegt dat er minstens 30.000 personen aangeschreven zijn.

Microsoft heeft een hotfix uitgebracht voor Hyper-V 2.0 op Server 2008 R2. Het blijkt namelijk dat de Xeon 5500 (Nehalem) een erratum heeft (een bug in Intel termen) waardoor je bluescreens of death kunt krijgen.

Een van de contributors op patchmanagement.org haalt een tweetal Microsoft supportartikelen aan. Een over problemen met het installeren van .NET framework updates en een over het niet migreren van updates op XP of Server 2003 na het installeren van een service pack.

Bij updates van .NET framework kan de volgorde waarin het e.e.a. geïnstalleerd wordt een wereld van verschil betekenen.

Wat de updates van XP of Server 2003 betreft zegt Microsoft het volgende: sommige updates blijken niet goed mee te migreren na de installatie van een service pack. De reden is doorgaans dat een bepaalde registry key ontbreekt.

To easily assess the security state of machines in an environment, Microsoft offers the free Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) scan tool. MBSA includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Microsoft Windows systems.
MBSA 2.1.1 builds on previous versions by adding support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. As with the previous MBSA 2.1 release, MBSA includes 64-bit installation, security update and vulnerability assessment (VA) checks, improved SQL Server 2005 checks, and support for the latest Windows Update Agent (WUA) and Microsoft Update technologies. More information on the capabilities of MBSA 2.1 and 2.1.1 is available on the MBSA Web site.
MBSA 2.1.1 runs on Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP and Windows 2000 systems and will scan for missing security updates, rollups and service packs using Microsoft Update technologies. The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool allows you to create a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file on a USB flash drive or a DVD. To create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive, download the ISO file and then run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool. Once this is done, you can install Windows 7 directly from the USB flash drive or DVD. The ISO file contains all the Windows 7 installation files combined into a single uncompressed file. When you download the ISO file, you need to copy it to some medium in order to install Windows 7. This tool allows you to create a copy of the ISO file to a USB flash drive or a DVD. To install Windows 7 from your USB flash drive or DVD, all you need to do is insert the USB flash drive into your USB port or insert your DVD into your DVD drive and run Setup.exe from the root folder on the drive. Note: You cannot install Windows 7 from the ISO file until you copy it to a USB flash drive or DVD with the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool and install from there. Stu schrijft op zijn bug over een hele rare bug waar hij tegenaan liep. Als je in vSphere niet de hardware 4 maar hardware 7 laag gebeurt er iets geks met je virtuele schijven in Windows Server 2008. Stu beschrijft dat de primaire harddisk het prima blijft doen maar dat een extra disk offline gaat. Deze kun je dan uiteraard in Windows wel online zetten maar het kan zeker vervelende gevolgen hebben.

Nu heeft Stu zelf gemerkt dat alleen Enterprise Edition hier last van ondervond en Standard Edition niet. Dat is op zich merkwaardig omdat beide OS’en de code op het gebied van schijven en hardware met elkaar delen. Het KB-artikel van VMware meldt het dan ook helemaal niet.

Nu is de bug, of het rare gedrag, nog tot daar aan toe. Wat Stu het meest bezwaart is de houding van VMware. “Oplossen? Nee hoor, niet nodig. Er is een workaround en daarmee basta.” Ik kan mij inderdaad voorstellen dat als je daar mee het bos in gestuurd wordt dat je niet echt blij bent.

Microsoft heeft een platform update uitgebracht voor Vista en Server 2008. Hiermee wordt een belangrijk deel van de vernieuwingen van 7 en Server 2008 R2 ook naar de voorgangers gebracht. Om het te kunnen installeren heb je op beiden service pack 2 nodig.

Windows Server 2008

• Windows Graphics, Imaging, and XPS Library
  The Windows Graphics, Imaging, and XPS Library enables developers to take advantage of the advancements in modern graphics technologies for gaming, multimedia, imaging, and printing applications. The new features include

  • DirectCompute for hardware-accelerated parallel computing scenarios

Microsoft heeft de RDP 7 client nu ook voor XP en Vista uitgebracht. Overigens heet het nu Remote Desktop Connection client.

Monitor the Security Compliance of Your IT Environment for Computers Running Windows
The Security Compliance Management Toolkit Series builds on previous Solution Accelerators to provide you with expanded best practices and additional automation tools to help configure and deploy security settings for the following operating systems and applications: Windows® 7, BitLocker™ Drive Encryption, Windows® Internet Explorer® 8, Windows Server® 2008, Windows Server® 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Vista® SP1, Windows XP® Professional SP3, and 2007 Microsoft Office SP1.

Toolkit Components

The guidance provides you with best practices and automated tools to help you plan and deploy your security baselines.
• Attack Surface Reference workbook. A resource that lists the changes introduced as server roles are installed on computers running Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008, for the toolkits specific to these operating systems.
• Security Baseline Settings workbook. A resource that lists all of the prescribed settings for each of the preconfigured security baselines that the security guides recommend.
• Security Baseline XML. XML files that allow your organization to consume the data defined in the security baseline settings workbooks.
• GPOAccelerator tool. A tool that you can use to create all the Group Policy objects (GPOs) you need to deploy your chosen security configuration. This release also supports Windows Server 2003, and creating security configurations on machines not joined to a domain.
