ICT nieuws t/m week 39 - 2009

De afgelopen periode was niet bijzonder, veel losse items over Windows 7 en beperkt ook wat over Server 2008 R2. Wel waren er behoorlijk wat artikelen over Exchange, vooral de trainingen voor Exchange 2010 vond ik interessant.

In dat kader is ook TechNet Live op 8 oktober in Den Haag interessant. Behalve Windows 7, Server 2008 R2 zal ook Exchange 2010 volop aandacht krijgen. BTW) maar is wel de moeite waard. De Windows 7 Ultimate DVD maakt dit alweer ruimschoots goed.

Ook was het natuurlijk weer patch tuesday deze maand. Vooral het probleem in de TCP/IP stack moet je zeker even bekijken. Microsoft heeft besloten geen reparaties meer te doen aan oudere OS’en zoals Server 2000 en XP m.b.t. MS09-048.

Virtualisatie komt ook ruimschoots aan bod. Ik heb de nodige artikelen over VMware en Hyper-V 2.0 verzameld.

Het Microsoft Exchange team denkt er serieus over na om Silverlight in te zetten om te gebruiken in beheertools voor Exchange. Maar omdat dit de aanwezigheid van Silverlight op beheerstations vereist willen ze graag weten wat beheerders daar van vinden.

VMware heeft een gratis webservice uitgebracht waarmee vooral MKB-klanten eenvoudig het ESXi (v4) installatieproces kunnen doorlopen. Het VMware Go-product zal vandaag op deze website als bèta gelanceerd worden.

Op sommige systemen gaat de installatie van Vista of Server 2008 SP2 niet goed. Je kunt dan de melding "Stop 0x0000003E" krijgen wat erop wijst dat er iets mis is met je processor(en).

Het blijkt dat bepaalde processoren problemen geven. Soms komt dat doordat de BIOS van je systeem per ongeluk een fix (een zogenaamd erratum) voor je processor heeft geladen die niet zou moeten.

Er is een update voor, alleen is die tijdelijk van de download site gehaald.

Verschillende bronnen melden dat er een serieus lek is geconstateerd in IIS 5 en IIS 6. Een hacker heeft code gepubliceerd op milw0rm waarmee een IIS server kan worden overgenomen. Voor de aanval heeft een hacker de FTP-module nodig van IIS.

IIS 5 (Windows 2000) is kwetsbaar voor deze aanval, IIS 6 ook maar hier is de situatie iets minder ernstig. Een server met IIS 6 heeft nog een functie genaamd ‘stack cookie protection’ die beschermt tegen overnemen, maar Windows 2003 waarop IIS 6 draait kan wel crashen.

Larry Dignan meldt dat VMware haar vCenter (datacenter automation) tools gaat uitbrengen. De meeste van deze tools zullen in 2010 verschijnen.

Hij somt kort even op welke tools in de vCenter familie zitten:

· CapacityIQ to manage capacity levels of virtual machines resources and data centers;

VMware heeft aankondigingen gedaan over vCloud, VMware’s cloud initiatief. Diverse service providers in de wereld zullen als hosting partijen optreden voor dit nieuwe platform van VMware.

Adobe heeft besloten haar kwartaalpatches een maand uit te stellen. Deze week zou Adobe volgens het door haar zelf ingestelde schema weer patches uitbrengen. Maar door de noodpatches van vorige week heeft Adobe besloten toch maar een maand te wachten.

Men heeft onvoldoende voorbereidingstijd gehad, zo stelt Adobe.

Op hun blog schrijft het Windows Server team over een nieuwe cache extension die men uitgebracht heeft voor PHP. Het is nu nog in bèta.

Andy Grogan bespreekt de situatie waarin je soms kunt verkeren dat je geforceerd alle Exchange attributen van een user account  moet verwijderen. Dat kan bijvoorbeeld gebeuren als je je mail server geforceerd uit het domain hebt gehaald o.i.d.

In zijn geval was het Exchange 2010 RC waarbij hij vergat de attributen van de user accounts te verwijderen.

Hij heeft daarna maar een tool geschreven dat precies doet wat je dan nodig hebt. Het heet Remove Exchange Attributes en is hier te downloaden.

Uiteraard legt Andy uit hoe je het moet toepassen.

Microsoft heeft een security advisory uitgebracht over een kwetsbaarheid die ontdekt is in het SMB 2.0 protocol. Dit protocol wordt gebruikt in Windows Vista, Server 2008, 7 en Server 2008 R2.

In tegenstelling tot wat diverse artikelen beweren zijn alleen Windows Vista, Server 2008 en 7 Release Candidate kwetsbaar. De RTM versie van Windows 7 is niet kwetsbaar, net als Server 2008 R2. Overigens is er geen verschil voor de 32- en 64-bits versies.

De kwetsbaarheid houdt in dat het mogelijk blijkt te zijn om systemen remote een blue screen bezorgen.

Microsoft heeft de MDT 2010 vervroegd uitgebracht. Kennelijk was men snel klaar met de bèta en de release candidate.

Microsoft heeft security bulletin MS09-048 een update gegeven. De reden is gelegen in het feit dat ook XP (zowel SP2 als SP3) geraakt blijken te worden. Microsoft heeft echter geen updates uitgebracht voor XP omdat men dat niet nodig acht. De rating is voor XP ingeschat op Low.

Voor Windows 2000 SP4 is het weer een heel ander verhaal. Hier blijkt dat het dusdanig ingrijpend is om patches te maken dat Microsoft heeft besloten geen patches te maken. Een significant deel van het OS zou herschreven moeten worden om het mogelijk te maken en dat wil men niet meer. Het OS zit nu eenmaal in de extended support fase. De rating voor Windows 2000 SP4 is overigens Important.

Medusoft meldt dat McAfee haar nieuwe 5400 scan engine af heeft. De nieuwe scan engine is aanzienlijk sneller en biedt meer herkenningsmogelijkheden voor malware.

Pas in november zal McAfee de scan engine mee gaan leveren met de dagelijkse DAT-updates. De software kan echter al gedownload worden vanaf de McAfee site.

When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. I’ve just come across a new backup utility for Windows Live Mail thanks to Steven Hodson of WinExtra. The program is called MailBrowserBackup, and, as it turns out, you can actually use it to backup a lot more than just your Live Mail. The recently updated .NET 2.0 application also lets you make complete backups of Outlook 2003/2007, Windows Contacts, Windows Live Messenger, Live Messenger Plus!, Internet Explorer Favorites, Windows Calendar, and much more.

When running the program, it will automatically detect your profiles and accounts, allowing you to check or uncheck the boxes of the items you want to backup. And should disaster strike, you can also use the application to restore the backups it creates.

MailBrowserBackup is free software licensed under the GNU GPL v2. You can download it for Windows XP SP2, Vista, and Windows 7 from here.

Amerikaanse onderzoekers hebben een manier gevonden om de koeling in datacenters aanzienlijk te verbeteren. Een belangrijk aspect hierbij is gebruik maken van de sensoren die in servers ingebouwd zitten om zo precies koeling op maat mogelijk te maken. Doorgaans worden datacenters overkoeld om zeker te zijn van een goede koeling. En aangezien koeling bijzonder kostbaar is lijkt een efficiëntieslag een buitengewoon zinvolle exercitie.

Op webwereld staat een video over de opvolger van Bluetooth. Het krijgt gelijk een andere naam, namelijk TransferJet. Op afstanden van een paar centimeter kunnen apparaten dan bestanden overzenden met snelheden van 375 Mbps.

Sony is de ontwikkelaar van de techniek maar heeft het overgedragen aan een consortium waarin 19 bedrijven deelnemen.

De verwachting is dat de techniek vooral in mobiele telefoons en digitale fotocamera’s gebruikt zal worden om automatisch bestanden over te zetten.

De 802.11n standaard voor draadlozen netwerken is nu definitief goedgekeurd. Na 7 jaar heeft de IEEE nu eindelijk de standaard geratificeerd.

Men verwacht de eerste apparaten die aan de standaard voldoen begin volgend jaar. Daarnaast worden er updates verwacht voor apparaten die nog niet aan de standaard voldeden. Of fabrikanten die (firmware)updates echt uitbrengen valt nog te bezien. De standaard schrijft voor dat een ‘pre-n-apparaat’ te upgraden is naar de officiële standaard. Maar de upgrade zelf is niet verplicht.

Op de Europese eWeek site staat een artikel over Windows Server 2008 R2. De upgrade vanaf Server 2008 is een bescheiden update maar wel een die de moeite waard is voor bedrijven die met Hyper-V aan de slag willen (of al zijn) en voor bedrijven die erover denken om op korte termijn Windows 7 uit te rollen.

Met name voor Windows 7 is Server 2008 R2 wel het maatje in de backoffice. Met name de DirectAccess en de BranchCache functies zijn zeer waardevol als je Windows 7 clients hebt.

Er ontstond nogal wat ophef op het web toen Microsoft 20.000 regels code doneerde aan Linux, voor de drivers van Linux op Hyper-V. Nu is er opnieuw nogal wat ophef ontstaan omdat Microsoft er niets meer aan lijkt te doen.

Het System Center team schrijft op haar blog over de opvolger van SCCM 2007 R2. Er komt een R3 versie aan. Dit is de eerste keer dat Microsoft een product een R3 release geeft.

Microsoft had vorige week al het security bulletin aangepast, ook XP blijkt kwetsbaar te zijn voor het lek dat men in TCP/IP heeft gevonden.

Microsoft heeft echter besloten om voor XP, net als bij Windows 2000, geen update uit te brengen.

XP is daarmee alleen kwetsbaar voor een Denial-of-service maar er kan niet ingebroken worden.

Voor de duidelijkheid voegt de schrijver van dit artikel er nog aan toe dat het een fout in TCP/IP is en dat ook bedrijven zoals Cisco updates hebben uitgebracht.

Op hun blog schrijft het Windows Server team over de support wijzigingen op Windows Server producten. In dit geval gaat het specifiek om Server 2000 en Server 2003 (incl. R2). Microsoft wil ons duidelijk maken dat Server 2000 uit de extended support loopt en ons voorbereiden op het feit dat Server 2003 (incl. R2) de extended support ingaan. Ook ontkent Microsoft nu dat er nog een Service Pack 3 voor 2003 komt.

Kortom, het wordt tijd om upgrades te gaan plannen. De datum die Microsoft noemt is 13 juli 2010 dus er is nog wel tijd.

Ryan Naraine heeft een verhaal over botnet-virussen die nog steeds het gat van MS08-067 (Conficker gebruikte dit) volop misbruiken. Dit bleek tijdens de Virus Bulletin 2009 conferentie. Het blijkt dus dat er nog meer dan voldoende machines op de wereld kwetsbaar zijn voor dit lek. Botnet-herders kunnen dit dus actief inzetten voor het opzetten van een botnet.

EMC heeft aangekondigd dat al haar storageoplossingen nog dit jaar FAST ingebouwd gaan krijgen. FAST staat voor Fully Automated Storage Tiering. LUNs waarop data staat dat absolute top performance nodig heeft gaat naar Flash based opslag, heeft een LUN minder performance nodig gaat het naar SATA-schijven.

Op Symmetrix is FAST nu in bèta test, op Clariion en Cellerra gaat de bèta over een paar weken beginnen.

Een tweede versie van FAST wordt al volgend jaar verwacht waarbij deze optimalisatie ook op sub-LUN niveau kan.

Daarnaast heeft EMC aangekondigd dat de Fiber Channel interface naar schijven gaat verdwijnen. Men gaat helemaal over op SAS, iets waar andere fabrikanten ook al aan begonnen zijn.

Citrix is begonnen met het verkopen van de eerder aangekondigde virtuele NetScaler VPX appliance. De netScaler is een applicatie accelerator en load balancer. Uiteraard zijn deze virtuele appliances goedkoper dan hun fysieke NetScaler MPX broertjes met dezelfde software.

In dit document zijn de mogelijkheden van de drie versies uitgewerkt. Behalve de drie betaalde versies heeft Citrix ook een gratis versie genaamd NetScaler VPX Express. Deze is beperkt tot slechts 1 Mb/s.

Microsoft heeft Interactive SuperComputing overgenomen. Dit ISC specialiseert zich in het leveren van desktop tools voor parallel computing. Wat Microsoft precies met de overname wil is nog niet duidelijk, daar wordt over een paar maanden meer duidelijkheid over verwacht. Het ligt natuurlijk erg voor de hand dat parallel computing belangrijk is, de processoren van moderne computers gaan ook die richting in.

De producten van ISC worden niet meer verkocht maar Microsoft blijft wel ondersteuning leveren.

Deze site legt uit dat VMware een 4e poot onder haar strategie heeft geschoven. De eerste 3 zijn:

· VMware View – manageable endpoints

· VMware vSphere – internal cloud foundation

· VMware vCloud – external clouds

De 4e poot is nu vApps. Een platform voor applicaties waarbij geen OS noodzakelijk is. De applicatie kan direct, zonder Linux of Windows, in een VM guest draaien. Als de guest de benodigde frameworks, zoals .NET framework of Java, ondersteunt kan een applicatie zonder OS.

Dit is op zich best revolutionair. Hier zullen OS-leveranciers niet blij mee zijn want het maakt ze overbodig.

VMware heeft zelf, met de overname van SpringSource, een Java framework in handen. Het is natuurlijk de vraag of het concept zal aanslaan maar het is duidelijk welke weg VMware ingeslagen is. Bedrijven als IBM en BEA/SUN/Oracle moeten zich zorgen gaan maken over de toekomst van hun Java framework middleware….. (WebSphere / WebLogic) als het aan VMware ligt.

En Microsoft…..zij kunnen eigenlijk alleen met een antwoord komen in de vorm van een alternatief.

Op het Microsoft Security Research & Defense blog raadt Microsoft ons aan om het SMBv2 protocol op Vista en Server 2008 systemen uit te schakelen (als je het niet gebruikt tenminste). Dit advies geldt als jet het protocol niet gebruikt en totdat er een hotfix is verschenen.

Op Gizmodo staat een artikel over een nieuwe tablet die Microsoft zou ontwikkelen. De Courier, zoals het ding volgens Gizmodo gaat heten, is een tablet PC met twee schermen. Eigenlijk een soort boek.

Het zou hier gaan om een hooggeheim project binnen Microsoft waar men bij Gizmodo niet alleen lucht van heeft gekregen maar kennelijk ook iets in handen heeft gekregen.

Mary-Jo Foley laat haar licht schijnen over het ding dat Gizmodo op haar website presenteert. Zij denkt zelf dat het inderdaad het apparaat is waarover ze al eerder geruchten oppikte.

Intel en VMware werken nauw samen aan geheugenbeschermingsfeature op x86-platformen. Dit RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability) belangrijk gezien het feit dat een probleem met het RAM tientallen virtuele machines tot een crash kan laten komen.

X86-platformen boden op dit vlak tot nu toe bijzonder weinig mogelijkheden

Intel is druk bezig en ontwikkelt nauw samen met VMware technologie die met memory fouten overweg kan. En passant neemt men ook energieverbruik onder handen. Zo zou het mogelijk kunnen worden om geheugen dat niet in gebruik is uit te schakelen.

Intel denk dat de massale adoptie van bedrijven voor SSD-schijven in PC’s er bijna is. Harde schijven bieden de laagste prijs per GB maar de basisprijs voor schijven blijft relatief hoog. Die wordt vooral bepaald door de kosten van de schijfbehuizing en zaken als koppen, interface e.d.

SSD’s met kleine capaciteiten zouden wel eens door deze bodemprijzen kunnen zaken waardoor ze interessanter zijn dan harde schijven. Niet iedereen heeft tenslotte 250 GB nodig (of meer).
